C:\Maxis\The Sims\GameData\Objects
C:\Maxis\The Sims\downloads directory
C:\Maxis\The Sims\Downloads\Transmogrified directory
Could someone please tell me if I'm doing this right?!

Since this isn't a house or building question(and this was posted in the House & Building forum), I'm going to move this into the Help forum, as that is the place to post about any technical problems with your downloads or the game. I'll be back in a few moments to edit this post with an answer to your question. :)
Edit to answer question: You don't need the Transmogrified folder. That is just mainly for those who are editing objects, and thus use the program Sims Transmogrifier. Most of us put our downloads in either the Downloads folder or the GameData/UserObjects folder.
Have you checked the locations you have placed those items to make sure they have been unzipped all the way? There are times when items in a set can be double zipped(each individual item is zipped then all of those zips get placed in another zip).

Where did you put the files? In Downloads? In UserObjects?
Did you manually check the files to make sure they are indeed all unzipped?
Are you sure the items are Sims1 items? I have seen some folks download Sims2 stuff accidentally.
Are you trying to add them while the game is on? You cannot add items while the game is up and running.

Have you looked in all of the possible categories those objects could be in? Sometimes creators will have items categorized in areas that aren't always the logical choice. For example, I have some hanging plants that were in the Lighting category, because they had been cloned from a hanging lamp.
If that doesn't pan out, then the only other thing I can think of is that you might have some ID conflicts. The game doesn't read the name a creator gives an item, like redchair or greentable. Instead it reads a unique sequence of letters and numbers that make up the ID code. If more than one item has the same ID, then the game arbitrarily assigns that code to just one of those items. So you might be looking for redchair and not finding it because the game has assigned that code to greentable instead.
To find any ID conlicts, you'll want the program Object ID. You can find it here at TSR in the Programs section: http://www.thesimsresource.com/programs/index.php?level=&catID=&_pc=211&_ppl=20&_ppage=9 . It's about 2/3 down the page.
For help using that program, see this thread (http://forums.thesimsresource.com/showthread.php?t=288000) from the Sims1 General Discussion forum.
