I think that was a weird way of telling you to backup before installing it. The EP files do overwrite the previous files. There is always only one version. So before installing an EP, if there are any neighborhoods and CC you want to keep, back them up and put them back in after you install the new EP, otherwise the new install will overwrite your old files. And they have to do that to update the icon and for the game to run correctly. I don't know what Aspyr was getting at.

The game should be installed at root level in a Games folder. Aspyr has changed their mind on this a few times but this is where it stands now, root level, Games folder. All the EPs will find your old game when you install them and overwrite the files.

I hope this helps. Report back if you need more help. :--)

The only place I've ever tried to download houses was on TSR - and I assure you I got hacks. I don't download hacks at all, and those houses mess me up every single time. I've even had the 'maxis items only' houses mess up my game. The worst one was one that messed up the mailbox, basically making it a cheats menu. Couldn't figure out what file it was, had to clear the game manually to get rid of it. The final straw was a crash that took all my people away. No more house downloads for me. So, I have to rely on my own building skill! And I can tell you, I am SOOO lousy at roofs ;)

Won't the Clean Installer help with this problem? I dont use a Mac, so wouldnt know, but have always used clean installer and unticked any boxes that had items not mentioned in a description, to be honest clean installer is my security blanket for downloads

Clean Installer is a great thing, but it's not available for Macs. Alas.

donelle, I understand your lot problem and the hack issue. If you like, try my minisite here. I have quite a few lots and I guarantee no hacks. When I package my lots I take my downloads folder out. No CC is installed at all. I use all Maxis stuff for all my lots. They've also been downloaded by other Mac users here and I've gotten good reports. (just read my comments)

Also, I share some things at Cat and SuSims (also in my siggy). We have plenty of lots and most are Maxis only content. Made by Mac users and divided up by EP.

 Uh, thanks Chloe. :o :D I do appreciate all the feedback I get here at TSR. And from my friends. It really helps me focus my efforts and produce what people like.

I had no idea this was an issue for Mac users. I was actually a fervent Machead before The Sims! I bought my first PC because a) I couldn't run all my Sims 1 EPs on my 400 MHz iMac and b) I was sick and tired of having to wait months for the software that PC users got to enjoy. At lower prices.

Anyway, when I create lots (and I haven't done so in months, alas, because of my elder clothing project), I always reinstall them after I package them so that I can run the file through Clean Installer and make sure there are no hacks or unintended CC in them. No hacks have ever showed up in my lot files doing this, and I've never had a complaint from a Mac user that any of my lots created problems for them.

One exception: I had built a lot purely as a shell for beta test objects, back when I was doing FA beta testing for TSR. I got rather attached to it and started adding on and decorating, and it turned out so nicely that I ended up publishing it (Suburban Dream). However, since it started out as a testing lot, I had used the aging off cheat to make sure my Sims didn't age past the stages I needed them to be for testing purposes. This in game cheat (not a separate hack) DID get packaged with the lot, but these cheats never show up in the Clean Installer. So for the person whose mailbox was giving them testing cheats, I would bet that the lot's creator used the boolprop testingcheatsenabled in game cheat, and that's what got packaged with the lot.

So the problem some Mac users are experiencing may not be custom hacks at all, but in game cheats. In the case of my Suburban Dream, I was able to fix the problem and reupload the file, but someone who had already installed the lot could also have fixed it in their own game just by opening the cheat window and typing in aging on. This may be a solution for some Mac users who've gotten hold of lots with these in game cheats hitching a ride. If you love the lot, try reversing the cheat and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

:) Gina

P.S. I just now noticed that the bulk of this thread is several months old and someone had just revived it recently. However, since I spent the time to write it, and I think it may have some good information for people having the problems the thread was originally written to address, I'm leaving the post as is. Hope the mods don't have me throttled!
