I've embarked on my first legacy journey... I don't think I've ever played through 10 generations - mostly because I'm too distracted by building houses and putting new Sims in them to test them out. I usually get to about the fourth generation before a new Sims game is released! So we'll see how far this goes. I guess that's why it's called a challenge!

I'd love to embed the pictures in the story - or should I be publishing in two locations? I won't make the mistake of linking to a legacy story elsewhere ;-)
Meantime thumbnails of screenshots will have to do.

Let me introduce the Wonders:

Betty Wonder
woke up one morning following a particularly brutal “Kick-A-Ginger” day to find herself alone in an unfamiliar world with nothing but an empty piece of land and a slim wallet. What was this place, she wondered. And how was she ever going to get back home?
“I’m going to kill someone,” she thought, figuring it was all part of an anti-ginger hoax.

But instead her survival instincts kicked in. She was already getting hungry and her meagre belongings weren’t going to cut it. All she could afford was a cheap fridge that infused itself into the taste of all its contents and a bed that gave her nothing but a bad night’s sleep. Not only that but she had nowhere to sit when she ate. She needed to find a job, fast – and maybe a boyfriend to help pay the bills!

Betty hailed a cab to get herself to the library where she figured she could find a newspaper, and maybe even some other human beings who could give her answers about where she was. As the taxi drove across town she felt overwhelmed by disgust at the waste of riding in the cab as a single passenger – she was an environmentalist, after all. Maybe she should see about getting a bike… but first she needed a way of paying for it.
Betty was thrilled to discover that the library had Internet access, and that offered a wider choice of job possibilities. She looked for something, anything, that would complement her natural sculpting ability, but there was nothing like that. All the jobs seemed to be low-paying schlep work. Out of desperation she nabbed the highest-paying job available – working as a latrine cleaner over at the military base. At least it might help her save up for a toilet! And she might meet some boys.
Speaking of which, where was everybody?

After accepting the job offer, Betty was overwhelmed with an urge to brush up on her logistic skills. She plucked a book off the shelf and lost herself in it until she felt she had learned something. Meanwhile a few people finally made an appearance at the library. They were all strange-looking, and not that friendly.

Maybe she’d have better luck at the local gym. She was going to have to spend a lot of time there anyway, since that was the only access she had to a decent shower - at least until she found a way home. The gym has always been a great place to meet boys, she thought.

The gym was bereft of any men. What kind of place had she found herself in? Betty introduced herself around to all the women at the gym, hoping they might have a clue about where she was and how to get home. They seemed to be more interested in eating ice cream or gossipping about each other. Where were the boys? Would work be any better? Would she be able to run on the treadmill some day without falling on her face?

Speaking of images... can someone tell me if the image links above work? I've linked them to my published screen shots. The game screen shots were too big to upload as attachments, so I guess if I want to have them show up as linkable thumbnails, I'll have to shrink them individually. Does anyone have a better idea, or an easier way?

Hi Inigo,
First off, nice start :D Secondly, your screenshots as forum attachments have to be 1024x768, 488 KB tops. So you'll either need to resize them (MS Paint works just fine for that), or you can hotlink them through a site like Photobucket.

Just in case the pics weren't visible, here's the thumbnails:

(That would be Betty Wonder, living in a really really small shack, taking a wasteful trip to the library, studying a bit of logic, and meeting some strange townspeople).

In this case, a shot of Betty surrounded by nothing but women, and doing a face plant on the treadmill.

Ok - time for chapter 2!

Betty didn’t spend long working the latrines. Her time at the gym gave her a jump ahead in physical fitness, which turned out to be a big bonus for military life. Maybe the military would be able to answer the mystery about where she was and how to get home. At least she could finally afford a table and chairs. And a sink. She was thrilled about the car-pooling, too – that really helped out the environment.

These early mornings were killing her, though. Betty felt her life seconds ticking away. All she really wanted was to get home and start a family. If she didn’t get home soon it would be too late for her ambition of starting a large family. It dawned on Betty that she may have to realize her family ambitions in this strange place. Could she really embrace the idea of leaving her own family legacy here? She might have to, as the military had not divulged any secrets, despite her close contacts at work.
It was time to get serious about meeting the men in this town…

Her boss was a decent-looking man named Jack Bunch. Betty got along great with Jack, but he was close to retirement and that didn’t fit her plans. Plus he was her boss and that had some drawbacks.
She met a very nice musician named Connor Frio at the gym, but she just didn’t find him that attractive. And he kept falling on his face while working out on the treadmill. That was just too embarrassing.
She heard about a young heroic cop named Hank Goddard, and thought she spotted him once or twice in town, but she’d also heard about his reputation as a womanizer. She wanted the father of her children to stick around, thank-you very much.

She got along well with one guy she met named Simis Bachelor. He was into sculpting, too. She couldn’t figure out why he was still single – what did all those women in town know that she didn’t? His desperation really put her off. So did his fashion sense.

Her neighbour Geoffrey Landgrabb was pretty cute, and they got along well, too. He was loaded, though, and his money was off-limits. Again, there was no point in starting a family with someone who wouldn’t be around. Not if she could help it. So when she met Thornton Wolff and they hit it off, she regretfully turned him down.

She thought there might be something going on between her and a geeky tech-writer with a kooky name she could never remember. She invited him over with the hopes of seducing him but he was more interested in his laptop than making out with her. Turned out he had a girlfriend anyway.

Then in this town full of awkward goofy people she met Christopher Steel. He was a very good-looking man and Betty was smitten with him. He didn’t have a job but his prospects were good. Betty decided to seduce him, even though she knew he was already in a relationship. She didn’t like the idea of being the home-wrecker, but times were tough. Betty and Christopher grew close - even made out a few times - but Christopher’s heart belonged to someone else. Betty would have to move on to whatever slim pickings were left. Was it worth breaking up her geeky friend Cycl0n3’s relationship? Would the military turn a blind eye on a fraternization between her and Jack? Could she stomach a life with Simis?

Rumours of her romantic fishing forays around town must have preceded Betty, because when she met the beefy Marty Keaton and innocently asked him if he were single, he almost bit her head off.

While her love life sucked and her life’s ambitions continued unrealized, her hard work was paying off. She had managed to save enough for a small bathroom extension on her little bedroom hut, and even had a little left over for a green-powered bicycle. It may have been because she was able to save some money by growing her own food – a concept which filled her with fuzzy warm planet-loving goodness.

And that’s when she met Dawood. She had spotted him slinking around observing work-outs at the gym. He stood out in his foreign clothes, and no one would talk to him. His mysterious nature intrigued her so she invited him home with her. It turned out that he was everything she could have dreamt – and like her, a stranger from far away. He seemed to feel the same way about her, and when she asked him about whether or not he had a girlfriend, he just blushed and smiled coyly.
She invited him to stay with her on his next visit, and learned that he had a way with her garden she could only have dreamed about. She loved his adventurous spirit, and although he didn’t play for her, he hinted at a long line of family virtuosos. And he sure liked to party – his love of hyper-socialization could cement their place in town. That is, If she could get him to stay

A long-distance relationship wasn’t quite what Betty had in mind. She was going to have to convince him to get serious.

Turned out Betty had nothing to worry about. Dawood may have been from Egypt, but he was totally smitten with Betty and married her the moment she suggested it. She'd been warned about whirlwind romances with mysterious handsome strangers, but her dating life had been such a disaster that she was willing to take the risk. After all, getting married was her idea. And she had a hunch about that first night they'd woohooed together... They had their own private wedding ceremony in front of Betty’s little shack during magic hour. Their hearts were filled with rosy love. Just like Betty’s belly was filled with the product of their rosy love.

Dawood’s bank account was merged with her own when he moved in with her. The extra cash helped him build a small three-room house for her and their future children. He was able to get a job in his field as well, working up at the science lab as a test subject. Two incomes were better than one any day.

Not only were Betty and Dawood able to build a small house with their combined income, but Betty was able to turn her former shack into a pottery studio. She shut herself up and taught herself how to sculpt out of clay and then out of wood for some extra cash. She was a natural!

Dawood took over caring for the garden, seeing how he was blessed with a green thumb. And now that there was an actual house-type structure on the lot, she could really start to appreciate what a beautiful piece of land it was. She could see the ocean from here. Life was perfect.

Life was so perfect, Betty’s dreams came true. (Too bad they came with morning sickness!) Betty and Dawood couldn’t wait for their first child. Betty more so. Not only would she finally be starting a family, but she would no longer have to get up at 5 a.m. for work, and would still got paid! She started to seriously think about quitting the military once she had to go back to work. But not while she was still on maternity leave. How long could she stay on the payroll without working? After all, she had dreams of raising a big family, but Dawood had turned out to be older than he looked - there were only a few good child-bearing years left in him. Her dreams were a race against the clock!

She was about to clean the shower when she felt her first contraction… it was time to have the baby! And she was alone! Had she made the right decision to have a home birth? Yes!

Betty and Dawood Wonder were proud to announce the arrival of their baby girl Winona at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon. Winona weighed in at 8 lbs 4 oz and is absolutely perfect, if not a little hungry.

Betty and Dawood were so thrilled at having their first child, they celebrated the best way they knew how - by trying for a second one.

Oh dear - success at trying for child number two! It’s a good thing a new pregnancy doesn’t interfere with taking care of a newborn so long as a Sim takes care of themselves. It helps that the babies are so adorable.

The stipend from the military helped, too. As did Dawood taking care of the morning feeding after Betty stayed up for the late one. The two of them managed to find a good rhythm. The big question was could they keep up the balance once a second child came along? Or a fifth – because that was Betty’s dream.

Dawood had his own ambitions. He was hardwired for a life of adventuring – it was in his blood. It dawned on Betty when she overheard him calling a travel agent that her dreams of family bliss might have a crack in them. Dawood swore she had nothing to worry about, but kept quiet about his plans to tunnel into dangerous tombs in the hopes of battling a mummy. His final promise to Betty as he headed out the door to China was, “The treasures will make us rich beyond our wildest dreams!” And then he was gone.

Betty was relieved when Dawood came back home instead of being killed by fireworks. Betty was so relieved that she let him host a big birthday party for Winona. Dawood was such a party animal! But that was OK with her. She requested that Dawood make Winona's birthday celebration a formal occasion, but was appalled to learn what some of his co-workers considered “formal.”

Midway through the crowded party, while no one was looking - because the guests were so busy vying for an opportunity to get their teeth into the lovely birthday cake - Winona grew up into a good toddler. Betty was hugely relieved that Winona was going to be a good person, albeit an absent-minded one.

The stress of the party was too much for Betty. All the guests had gone home but one more was on the way.

Dawood should probably have taken Betty to the hospital, but it was late and someone had to put Winona to bed.

Everything turned out okay, and Betty and Dawood are proud to introduce their son Allan Wonder to the world. Betty is starting to realize that having babies is exhausting. Will she make it to number five? Will Dawood take off to France, never to return? Will he stick around when he realizes Betty is determined to keep pumping out babies? Will Dawood and Betty be able to afford a house that’s big enough for their big family or will the social worker step in?

Stay tuned for generation 2… the Reckoning.

Thanks, Spladoum... makes me giggle, too. They all kind of do - I'm such a sucker for the screen shot, as you might notice... We'll see if the limit of five shots per post shifts the way I end up presenting the story. I had put together these shots and the story so far before learning about the limited shots, so figured I might as well just put them up. I hope it doesn't interfere with following the plotlines (not that there are any at this point). Dawood just found a gnome on his last trip to China - how can I not include some shots of that?

I take it that the same legacy continues in one single thread?

Yes. A legacy should have its posts in one single thread, though if you decide to run another, non-legacy challenge simultaneously, you can open a new thread for that as well.

Betty’s life was all about the kids – the newborns, the toddlers, the impending school years. She was on her own most of the time, with Dawood being either at work or on one of his walkabouts. The whirlwind nature of her pregnancies gave her some concern – she’d never heard of a seven day pregnancy in her life. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with the children. Dawood mumbled something about the algorithms of Ra to reassure her and didn’t seem find the quick turnaround unusual. The condensed schedule sure put the pressure on her, though, especially after one particular day when she was overwhelmed with sparkling rainbow lights and suddenly felt older.
“Happy birthday,” Dawood had whispered. He had gazed at her with his deep dreamy eyes, causing her to swoon. The birthday wishes didn’t make much sense to her… it seemed like just yesterday she had turned 18. How long ago had kick-a-ginger day been now? It seemed like just yesterday.
Betty longed for the slower speed of her other life. She struggled for some kind of answer as to how to return to it, and more importantly, how to return with her husband and her two children in tow. She couldn’t leave them, now – they were part of who she was. She begged Dawood to ask the senior level scientists at the lab to investigate her situation.
“I gave up my life in Egypt for you,” pleaded Dawood. “Can’t you do the same for us?”
He was in the middle of teaching their daughter Winona how to talk. Dawood was so good with the kids, so attentive and supportive. He was a great father to them and a great husband to her. But she was terrified of forgetting her other life altogether. Didn’t she have a family there, too? Did they miss her? If she couldn’t remember them did it really matter? Dawood’s point was completely fair.
“Ejup,” said Winona. Betty’s heart melted.

Betty looked after Winona and baby Allan during the day while Dawood went to work at the lab. Betty lost herself in her sculpting shed in the afternoons while Winona and the baby had their afternoon naps. The creative process helped her vent her frustrations at being lost between two different worlds. She was determined to put one of them behind her – and every passing day the old one slipped further away. Her maternity leave continued to pour in, the extra income helping to grow their family savings.
Betty's sculpting ability was expanding as well, since she was able to indulge in her escapes out in the shed. She had developed a keen ability to sell her works for more than they were probably worth, and now that she had begun to experiment with different materials she was able to earn even more.
One afternoon she received a mysterious phone call on her mobile. The voice was oddly familiar but sounded like it was being put through some sort of voice box.
“Word around town is… you got a way with a hammer and chisel,” the voice on the other end of the line grizzled. The tone was gruff and a little frightening.
“Sure…,” stammered Betty. She knew she still had a lot of technique to learn, but didn’t want to put herself down to someone who sounded like they might be interested in buying her work. There was no reason to inform them that the work might be kind of mediocre…
“Our, uh, company, is looking for some, uh, décor. Ya… some wooden décor. For the office. That something you do?” The man’s filtered breath came heavy and nervous.
“Sure,” said Betty. “I do wood.”
Betty rapped herself in the forehead. She sounded like an idiot! This guy was never going to offer her a commission.
“We need five pieces. Make ‘em hollow inslde. Uh… because that makes ‘em lighter. Ya – don’t want to wreck the floors. Boss would have a sh—a problem. Bring the stuff to the back entrance of the warehouse – you know the one?”
Betty had noticed a partly boarded-up abandoned warehouse on the way to work a few days before, hidden back from the road behind some shady trees. It was the only warehouse in town, but she had assumed it to be abandoned. The idea of delivering anything to that area of town gave her the shivers. But this would also be her first commission, and she couldn’t bring herself to turn it down…
“I know the one,” said Betty.
“Good. Bring them when they’re done.” The caller hung up.
That was weird, thought Betty. She started working on the first hollow wooden piece, but didn’t tell anyone about the mysterious phone call. She thought it best to keep the client to herself.

Before long – only another day or two, it felt - it was time to celebrate Allan’s first birthday. Dawood insisted on having a party, of course. Everyone always had a great time when he hosted his shindigs. And he was good enough to invite her old military co-workers as well as his associates from the lab.
When Betty greeted her old friend Erin, she was shocked at how much her friend had aged in the few days since they had last seen each other. But Betty kept quiet about it. Betty felt that surge of pressure to have another child. She and Dawood had never really talked about the size of family they would have. She may have dropped the number five into a conversation once, but Dawood had been talking about wanting to go do more exploring at the time, and Betty wasn’t sure if the number had really sunk in for him.

Betty didn’t have much to worry about – at least as far as having another child that was welcomed by his or her father. When Betty found out she was pregnant with their third child, Dawood was thrilled. He spent as much time talking to the child in her belly as he did to her.
They realized they might need a bigger house, and began to plan for an extension that would accommodate an extra bedroom or two. In the meantime they splurged on a proper dining table and chairs, plus a couch that they could read to the kids on. Allan’s recent birthday demanded an extra high chair in the kitchen, and they were going to need a third crib for the new baby when it arrived.
“I have to go away for a few days,” Dawood confessed after one particularly harried shopping spree.
“Alone, again?” Betty asked, trying not to sound too hurt. “Couldn’t the kids and I come with you this time?”
“I wish you could,” responded Dawood, avoiding her gaze. “Winona and Allan are far too young, though – and I’m worried something might happen to the baby. Not that I’ll be doing anything risky or anything..."
The news upset her, but she swallowed her concern for now. He had warned her of his need to travel, and she didn’t want to deny him his dreams for the sake of her own. She could handle three kids, she thought. And when he did go away, for some reason it always felt like he had never left. One of these days she was going to have to find out about what his adventures entailed.

Winona spent a lot of time having to entertain herself around the house. Her mother Betty was too busy looking after Winona’s baby brother Allan, and running to the bathroom suddenly, to spend too much time with her. She used to get a lot more attention, but now that she had learned to walk and talk, and could use the potty on her own, the attention had waned. She was a good kid, and was pretty well able to look after her immediate needs. She’d get lost for hours in conversations with her teddy bear Mr. Snuggles, or playing with her baby xylophone. There was no limit to the toys available in the house.

Winona was lucky for the attention she got when she was first born. Now that she had a brother to compete with and a new sibling on the way, her needs were no longer being catered to. She spent longer in the high chair than she wanted to, usually. At least sometimes her parents would blend a little leftover adult food for her to try. She liked it when they did that. She learned to use the potty pretty quickly. Winona’s parents seemed eager that she figure it out as soon as possible. She wished they would empty it more often. Sometimes she would use the potty after a new meal and it would still be dirty from breakfast. One time it overflowed it was so full, and Betty had to mop up the mess. That had made both of them cry.

Winona’s dad Dawood gave her lots of attention when he was around. He had taught her to talk, and take her first steps. He was away a lot, but when he was home he would pick her up and toss her into the air.
“One day maybe I’ll take you with me,” her dad would say as he waited for the taxi to take him to the airport. “You can help me fight the terrible mummies!”
She loved his tales of adventure, and hearing about far away places. She knew he made up the stuff about mummies and gnomes, but that was okay with her. She adored her dad. Her parents were proud of everything she had accomplished as a toddler. They knew her birthday was coming up soon and together they picked out the bed she’d grow into, and toys she could learn on while she went to elementary school. She wanted her parents to be proud of her too.
But then she would forget where she put Mr. Snuggles and have to go and find him.

One day while Winona was eating her cereal in the high chair, her mom got a phone call from Dawood’s lab.
”What do you mean, there’s been an accident?” cried Betty. “Is he hurt badly?”
The door of the house opened and Dawood came in half-naked and completely singed. “I need a shower,” he complained, wincing with every step. Winona watched from the corner as her mom panicked about Dawood’s accident. Dawood consoled Betty, laughing off the recent explosion as part of the job, and distracting her with a flirtateous joke or two. Neither of Winona's parents noticed her staring at them from the corner, or the trauma she was experiencing at witnessing her father’s smoky arrival or her mother’s panic. She began crying, and would only stop after Dawood had spent a good amount of time snuggling with her. She thought he smelled terrible but after a bit was just happy for the attention.
Dawood felt so guilty about Winona’s distress that she was all he thought about on his next voyage to Egypt. In his mind she was still an infant, and he forgot that she was about to grow up into a child. Sadly, her trauma had postponed his wish for her to grow up well – his accident and the long absence afterwards thwarted her normal development, and pretty soon her younger brother surpassed her maturity.

Baby Allan (named by his mother after an old tool that made pretty pictures prettier, she said) had no difficulty developing normally. He would grow up full of bravery and athleticism, following in the steps of his mother. His parents wished him the life of a superhero, although his quick development hinted at a knack for invention early on. He would make them proud, regardless. Everyone was sure.

Allan grew quickly, surpassing his older sister in all their collective skills. He learned everything quickly. Allan was happy that his parents took the time they did to teach him everything he needed to know. He planned to put it to good use one day. Even now he had dreams of growing up and making himself a place in the world. He knew he could be anything he wanted – a detective, an inventor, an explorer, an astronaut. Anything he wanted to be.

Allan spent a lot of time with his sister, but her crying annoyed him. Even when there seemed to be no reason to cry, she would suddenly burst out in tears. He couldn’t wait to grow up and get his own room. He liked it when he had their play room to himself and he could just concentrate on his building blocks. When his mother Betty told him he was going to have a new brother or sister pretty soon, he thought, “That means there’s going to be more crying!” Allan left his mother to rub her pregnant belly by herself and crawled back to his toy blocks. He couldn’t wait to grow up and not be surrounded by a crying family!
