'Can't locate game folder'

I've looked through all of the related threads here, and none are helpful. I'm getting the 'TSR Workshop could not locate the game folder. Would you like to browse for it manually?' error message. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that didn't fix it. Everyone says to select the Sims 3 folder (in Program Files) and I do, specifically C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3. It still gives me the same error again. If I say, 'no' to the browse manually prompt, it gives me this message: 'TSR Workshop can not run without access to the game files, exiting.' and I have no choice but to press okay. It usually brings up the splash screen then, but if I try to create an object, I go through the same error process all over again.

Notes about my setup:
Both TSR Workshop and The Sims 3 are installed to their default locations.
I'm running Windows 7 on a 64-bit machine.
TSR Workshop has worked fine for me in the past.
I uninstalled and reinstalled all of my Sims games recently as they were pretty buggy.
If I go to the Preferences area, all paths for the various expansion packs look correct.

Please help - this is very frustrating!

Thank you!

I am having the same thing. I am assuming that since I have a 64-bit and the folder reads Program Files (x86) instead of just Program Files, that the program isnt seeing it right. Is TSR Workshop 64-bit compatible?

I'm with you all. But I think I am getting a slightly different error. I tried running TSR Workshop last night but it won't run cause it's looking in "My Documents" for the "EA" folder. I didn't install Sims 3 there and the EA folder isn't there. I have TSR pointing to the Sims 3 folder under Program files. But it is still looking in My Documents folder. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it does the same thing. And every time I get the Error is closes the whole program. Making it so I can't create anything. I.E. I was trying to go through the tutorial and went to open a coffee table and as soon has I click on the table, i get the error and it closes. I thought maybe it was just that one object but it's all of them. Hopefully someone can help.

I just would like to know how to change it so it's not looking in that folder any more. I am also running Windows 7 64 bit.

Realipj,

Sims3 creates 2 sets of folders -- one in the Program Files section(which contains the information for the items and such that came with the game) and one in the Documents section(which contains information for any downloads, saved Sims, worlds, saved games, screenshots, videos, lots and families in the Library, etc). Workshop needs to be able to recognize both sets of folders in order to run correctly. Have you played the game on this computer or are you using it just to create? If you have not played the game yet, then it has probably not generated the folders needed in the Documents area. Try running the game to generate those folders, then install Workshop.

OK I am getting the same problem as mentioned above in other posts by other people. "Can't locate game folder" After a while of messing with it I got this message "Folder: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\GameData\Shared\Packages" Error could not find part of the path "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\GameData\Shared\Packages"

I am thinking the problem would be that I didn't install the game from a disk but rather from Origin. Because of this my Game folder is now located in the following path. "C:\Program Files\Origin Games\The Sims™ 3\GameData\Shared\Packages" Is there any way to get the TSRworkshop to work when the game is installed through that path?

OK I got the TSR workshop to open without any warnings by going into and creating a path that matches the required path. Now I am copying all the content from the origanal files and pasting it into the files I just created with any luck, hopefully this will get TSR workshop to work properly.

Here is where the most updated version would be located

C:\Users\Owner\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3

but I get the cannot locate the game folder......no matter how I try to point this application it will not work....totally useless to me at this point.

The path you have set is not correct. The correct path to the game folders that Workshop needs should be C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3.

In case you used Origin to install the game, the file should be C:\Program Files x86\Origin Games\thesims3...
If you did the installation through any other program try to look for the files in its folders. (I apologize for my horrible english)

Has anyone found a way to get around this problem?

I have installed this with the disk, but after updating the game launcher Origins was installed

When I right click on the Sims 3 icon, the target of the exe file is the same directory as TSR is trying to find.

Sorry if this comes off a bit rude, but that does not help us at all. For the love of pete, our games were not installed in that location! I'm running TS3 on Windows 7 64-Bit and through Origin, and so far Workshop is useless because my files aren't located in C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3. They are both located in the Origin folder and the Documents folder. Now could you or someone else PLEASE tell us how to get around this, or release a patch to allow users to select the path, instead of pretending to allow users to select it?

Wherever the game is installed, you need to select the folder which has The Sims 3 installation in it. So you can easily select the folder in Origin.

Don't know if anyone else is using steam with their Windows 7 64bit, but if you are like I am, and had this error pop up you need to go to the following folder address:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the sims 3

I had the same problem because I installed The Sims in another folder than the default choice..
I simply chose to find the folder when the program asked, and for me it was where the game was installed.. C:\Games\TS3\The Sims 3.
It was not the folder under Electronic Arts in the Documents-folder.
