Hi.

I recently purchased a set of sims 1 games, and have found that upon trying to install the last three expansions (unleashed, superstar and makin' magic), the game refuses to work.

I have been installing them in the correct order, and upon finding that the game no longer worked when I had finished installing unleashed, I uninstalled according to the instructions in the correct way to uninstall thread.

The problem is not so much with the installing- they appear to install fine. But when you go to play, something goes wrong. The screen goes black as it does just before the game starts, but instead of starting, it crashes to the desktop. There are no error messages. It's really odd.

I'm running windows xp, and the game is running on compatibility mode for win95. (I have tried running it on all the compatibility modes and it doesn't seem to effect the result.)

I have tried installing twice. The first time, I installed them one after another without checking to see if they worked. (excitement. :p) The second time, however, I tested the game each time to check that it was working. The sims deluxe, house party, hot date and vacation all work like dreams. It was only when I installed unleashed that I encountered the problem.

I'm really not sure what to do. I'm on my third time installing now, and I'm hesitant to keep going lest I trigger whatever it is again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Unleashed and later EPs are XP-compatible, so you don't need to set the compatibility mode at all.

Can you please post a DxDiag of your system specs, so we can make sure that the computer you are using can handle the game? Instructions for that and the information we need to see from it can be found here.

Certainly can. I'm sorry I didn't think to include it in the original post.

You still need to post the Display Information part of the DxDiag. We need to see that as well to know whether you have an on-board graphics chip, a dedicated video card, whether your video drivers are up to date, etc.
