My game is getting seriously laggy. I'm at the point where it takes close to a half hour for the game to load, then close to 15 minutes for the neighborhood. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean out the downloads folder? I'm too afraid to just remove and dump files, because some stuff I have uploaded are from sites no longer around.

can you move them to a flash drive or burn them onto a disk for later use? is there anything that you have never used and had impulsive downloaded that your now wondering why you did that you could delete?
I think I would just copy the whole download folder and put it on a flash drive and then remove what I'm not using.

Part of the problem is, I can't tell what's what. Some creators were less diligent with their naming conventions than others. Also I'm afraid to do what I did before and delete stuff because I deleted a mesh once that I thought was not attached to anything and turned out it was.

Try using the sims2pack clean installer. It will list all the packages in your download folder and you can organise them by type as well. When you click on a package it also gives a small image so if it's not labeled you can still get an idea of what it is. Only problem would be with hair i'd say but you can delete that through bodyshop. There are programs that scan for orphan meshes etc but i've never used one so im not sure how trustworthy they are.

I would suggest going through one folder at a time and go into the game to see what's in the folder and see if it is any use. I agree with sinful_aussie in getting the clean installer. Anything highlighted in pink is a duplicate and can be deleted.
