This has been happening since I re-installed my game after not playing it for a couple of years, and may have just began before I stopped playing the game, but now it's becoming aggravating..
I don't know if it's an issue with my mouse or with the game.
What happens is that when I'm in Buy or Build mode and I want to use the tool that changes color or pattern and after the pattern selection drops down - my mouse will go everywhere but on the thing I want to change when I click on it, whether it's a wall, floor or object. I have to be so careful when moving my mouse (just little by little) to get ON the thing I want changed or it goes haywire all over again. Also after it is finally changed, a white square will be zooming about the Sims room until I can click on the mode I am not in. In other word if I am in Build Mode - I have to click into the Buy Mode to make the white wandering square stop.
I have no problem with my mouse out of the game.

I should add my system specs and mention that I do have Vista which I will always regret.

Can you please post the Display Device Information for this computer? We need to know what graphics card or chip you have and the video driver date as well to see if your drivers are up to date.

I hope this is what you need. I am not technical. I have a techie that does everything for my PC from his home (he works on my husbands computers at work). I would not trust myself to fiddle with the innards of this machine. 
I just had the graphics card installed two weeks ago so that is new. I don't know about the mouse driver tho - have no idea.
