The question

Attached File  1-2%20research%20copy.jpg   90K   44 downloads
Alicia Nelson frowned as she clicked off the computer and watched the screen go dark. She slowly shook her head and set off for the dining room with a worried expression. This morning’s offering was soggy pancakes. Alicia shared the universal opinion that dorms served some of the worst food on the planet. Still scowling she set the bowl down and pulled out a chair.

Attached File  1-3%20TellMe%20copy.jpg   106.14K   35 downloads
Brady Baker, her friend and dorm-mate, sat down across from her. “What’s wrong, Alicia? Research not going well?” Alicia liked Brady, but didn’t admire him. His carefree, do-it-tomorrow attitude did not mesh well with her logical, take-charge personality.

“It’s not that,” Alicia replied. “I’ve been doing some reading online. It’s got me thinking.”

“Tell me!”

Attached File  1-4%20AlicaiSpills%20copy.jpg   80.16K   32 downloads
She takes a deep breath, perfectly aware that what she was about to say would likely result in endless teasing. Brady was usually a nice enough guy, but she was wary of his sardonic sense of humor.

“Well, what if the Maya are right?”

“What do you mean?” Brady was taken aback.

“Don’t laugh! Some people are saying that since their calendar stops in December of this year, it could be the apocalypse. What if they somehow knew that the world was ending this year?”

No way!” Brady exclaimed. “This doesn’t seem like you. You’re so practical. The last person to have mystical leanings. You’re scaring me!

Thanks Spladoum for fixing my mess!

Alicia was a rather serious girl, embarrassed to voice her misgivings out loud, especially to a guy like Brady. She braced herself for his teasing, as he followed her into her room.
Attached File  1-6 Discuss copy.jpg   84.45K   22 downloads
“Sure, make fun of me, Brady. I’m not saying it true, but what if something really bad does happen?”
“You know, girl, people predict stuff like this all the time. When we were little kids everybody was going on about Y2K. My parents filled up all the bathtubs with water and brought home a whole bunch of toilet paper. Gotta have toilet paper if the planet goes dark.”

Attached File  1-7 flopsonbed copy.jpg   61.48K   28 downloads

That’s my point.” Alicia flops down on her bed, wishing she was talking through her stuffed bunny, like her mom had done when she was a child. “They worried and read in the newspaper about other people worrying. They watched on TV about people worrying. There was a bunch of talking but most people did nothing. Lucky for them, the computer programmers got busy and the problem went away. This is different. Nobody knows what the Maya had in mind.”
Attached File  1-8 bradystandsup copy.jpg   59.14K   23 downloadsBrady shrugged. “Not much we can do about it, except hope. If we knew for sure, I could quit working on my term paper and go have some fun.”
“Geez, Brady, as if you need an excuse to have fun!”

“I’ll show you fun,” he joked.

Alicia continued to brood and she took the problem to bed with her that night. It was a restless night and her dreams kept waking her up. Her thoughts seemed to be on a permanent spin-cycle. She thought about Brady’s reaction. Her friend was more the grasshopper type, while she resembled the proverbial ant, but he was right on one point. She normally did not have time to waste on vague feelings. Somehow, this felt different, she could not stop poking at the problem.

Get a grip,” she lectured herself. “You are an economics major. This distraction is not going to help you prepare for a business career.”

Deciding that sleep was hopeless, she wandered outdoors and had a look at the sky. It was utterly calm and peaceful.
Attached File  1-13HowWillIKnow.jpg   88.7K   23 downloads
The winter sky was clear and beautiful. The snow on the ground reflected the moonlight, and it was not really dark enough for viewing. Alicia could see the moon and Venus through the low-powered telescope. Nothing answered her questions. “I’ve got to get some sleep, I’ll be wasted tomorrow.”
Attached File  1-14KeepWatching.jpg   75.91K   22 downloads
None of Alicia’s daily tasks or classes distracted her from her thoughts.

Even Brady’s incessant cheerfulness was no help.

Since you asked so nicely, Isabella, here is another little chapter.

The Second Opinion

She decides to discuss it with Professor Hansen.
Attached File  2-1hugsprofessor.jpg   115.73K   14 downloads

Attached File  2-2whatIthinkmayhappen.jpg   46.95K   18 downloads
"From what I have been reading, the Maya were skilled astronomers. I keep seeing references to the fact that the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way. Do you think that could change the energy coming from the galaxy to Earth?”
Attached File  2-3studentscrowd.jpg   101.12K   17 downloads
Other dorm-mates joined the conversation. Alicia’s fretting was infecting the whole place. “It’s not just me, lots of people are talking about this.”

Professor Hansen shook her head and scolded, “Alicia, you are one of my brightest and most ambitious students. You should be focusing on your classes, not this kind of nonsense.”
Attached File  2-4talkiingtoProf.jpg   46.08K   15 downloads
But Professor,” Alicia countered. “This really could be an economics issue. If there is a catastrophe, nothing we have studied up to now will be true anymore. And even if nothing happens, there might be all sorts of upheaval.”
Attached File  2-5 disappointed.jpg   47.73K   14 downloads
“I hope that didn’t sound as whiny as I think.”

Alicia choked down her disappointment. “I thought teachers were supposed to be open-minded. I should have known that an econ prof would not be interested in eschatology: should have asked an anthropologist or theologian.”

The Idea
Attached File  3-1IntroducesDemetra.jpg   94.33K   14 downloads
Brady sailed into the dorm with a really cute girl in tow. She looked younger, maybe a sophomore. He introduced Alicia to Demetra.

“Alicia, I was at the student union this morning and heard Demetra talking about the same thing you mentioned the other day.”

“The Mayan question?” Alicia asked.

“Yeah, that whole end-of-the -world thing, and her story is interesting.”

Demetra told them about her idea. “I’ve been thinking about leaving town and setting up away from other people. You know, just in case. I never really thought of myself as a survivalist, but I can see their point. I’d like to have a defensible position by the end of the year.”
Attached File  3-2imdemetra.jpg   31.56K   18 downloads
Demetra, I’ve known you for ages, and this is really out of left field. You always seemed more interested in going to a party than going off into the back woods.” Brady smirked, but he knew he was the same way.

“Brady, It’s hard to party if you’re dead!”
Attached File  3-3my idea.jpg   41.82K   18 downloads
Alicia stepped into the conversation before it got bloody. Brady handed out sarcasm a lot better than he took it. “What kind of arrangement are you thinking about?”

Demetra explained where she got the idea. “My mother was born in a commune. They lived there until she went to high school. She told me it wasn’t successful, but she did have some good memories. She still loves growing things, and kinda makes me think of Mother Nature”

“What happened to the commune?” Alicia asked the question, but she and Brady were both curious.
Attached File  3-4illcallmom.jpg   44.24K   12 downloads
“How about if I ask her to tell us? She’ll give you the straight story.“ The two agree and Demetra makes a call on her cell phone. “She’s inviting us for Tuesday. Are you guys free for lunch? What are your schedules?“

Spirit’s Story

Demetra’s mother turned out to be a lovely lady with an amazing lack of wrinkles for someone who spent so much of her life outside. She had the same sparkle as Demetra but underlying it was a deep calm. She spoke with a soft, low voice.
Attached File  4-2lunchwspirit.jpg   66.99K   13 downloads
As the others were introducing themselves to her mom, and chuckling quietly when she mentioned that her name was Spirit Freelove, Demetra went off to the kitchen to make some sandwiches. She listened to the conversation while she spread the mayonnaise.

Attached File  4-3aboutthecommune.jpg   53.06K   13 downloads

Spirit started telling the story. “My mom and dad were 70’s hippies. Mom was exploring ‘alternative lifestyles’ when she was in college. When she heard about the group in Riverblossom Hills, she went to check it out. I’ve always suspected that she saw my dad on that first visit, and dropped out of college on the spot. Keeping with the times, she chose not to get a job in what she called the ‘Establishment.’”

“There were 20 or so people there at any given time. The gardening chores, cooking and cleaning were shared. Several women had children, and they tried to raise them as if it were one big family. No one made a big deal out of who was sleeping together, and I think that some kids were not sure who their real parents were. Asking was not encouraged, but I believed my mother when she said that my dad was my dad.”

Attached File  4-4questionsforspirit.jpg   47.47K   11 downloads

As the others strolled outside to look at Spirit’s beautiful garden and pond, Alicia stayed to ask the question they had all been wondering about.

“What happened to the group?”

“Times changed. The war ended and the economy boomed. Some people got tired of doing without. Some people got tired of no privacy. Others just got tired of the endless discussions and votes. It’s easy to say that material things aren’t important, but when you’re tired and cold, principles don’t keep you warm. The diet got pretty boring. The leaders were pretty adamant about living off the land, and sometimes people were hungry. Some, like my parents, decided on a more traditional family as their children got older. In the end, there was really no consuming reason to go on.”

“I want you kids to think long and hard before you decide to go off somewhere. It is unbelievably hard to live off the grid. In fact, I’m not sure I should even tell you this next bit. I don’t want to encourage you to make a hasty decision.”

“Tell us what?” Alicia asked.

“The old Freelove property is standing vacant. It’s on the edge of Riverblossom Hills, just up the road. It’s not as remote as Demetra would like, but it is pretty rural. The few families that still live here look out for each other, and have a lot of farming and gardening experience. They generally have a live-and-let-live attitude.”

Attached File  4-5SpiritandDemetra.jpg   69.2K   10 downloads
“If we decide to go ahead, would you consider moving in with us?” Demetra suddenly faced the horrifying notion that she might well survive but her mother might not.

“Oh, my dear, no! I‘ve grown accustomed to my comforts. Besides, communal living was my parents’ thing. I was a draftee, not a volunteer.”

“But what if the apocalypse does happen?” The beginning of tears clouded Demetra’s eyes.

“I’m satisfied with my life’s work and I’ve seen you grow up. I’ll have no regrets.”

Research and Planning

Alicia finished the semester, but was mortified to see her G.P.A. had slipped to a 3.8. She was really finding it difficult to keep up with her studies and think about the end of the world. Her only hope was to make a decision before she started her last semester.

Attached File  5-1enlistinghelp.jpg   108.55K   7 downloads

At the library, she asked some friends to help her with some research on the subject.

“So, what we want to know is what other groups have tried communal living, and what happened to them.”

They read a lot about Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Marshall Applewhite’s Heaven’s Gate and Branch Dividians, among others.

Several hours later they emerged from their research haze. Alicia concluded that the greatest danger in communal living arrangements came when the groups became cults.

Attached File  5-2thelistjpg.jpg   110.32K   10 downloads

She put together a short list of potential pitfalls and sat down to discuss it with her friend Carter.
  • The first danger is having a leader who thinks they’ve been chosen by God. These guys seem to think that anything they do is right.
  • The second thing is trying to go against the government. Not paying taxes and collecting illegal arms is a sure way to attract the wrong type of attention.
  • The third element is too much isolation. Families get worried if their loved ones are suddenly cut off from them.
“OK,” said Carter. “No gods, pay taxes, call home. Piece of cake.”

Attached File  5-3pieceocake.jpg   73.59K   10 downloads

Carter always reminded Alicia of a wiggly puppy. So much happiness was infectious.

Finding the Property

Alicia taxied downtown to speak to her Uncle Martin. As a lawyer he should be able to find out who owns the Freelove property.

Martin’s building was more than impressive. Alicia walked through the front doors and waited patiently to be greeted. Finally she tapped on the desk. when the receptionist looked up from the screen she said. “I’d like to speak to Martin Baxter for a few minutes.”

Attached File  6-1ruderecptionist.jpg   95.71K   9 downloads

“Do you have an appointment?’

Attached File  6-2Martinbusy.jpg   84.03K   12 downloads

“No, I only need a minute. I’m sure he’ll see me. My name is Alicia Nelson.”

“Mr. Baxter is very busy,” came the haughty reply. “Please have a seat in the waiting room and I’ll see when he will be available.”

Attached File  6-3waitingroom.jpg   88.73K   16 downloads

The receptionist, who’s name plate read ‘Sheila,’ was in no hurry to buzz Martin. Alicia thought, I bet she’s not working. If I could get a look at that computer screen, I’d probably see her playing the Sims3.

Alicia was kept cooling her heels for quite a while. Her uncle was the least pretentious man that she knew. Why did he keep such an unfriendly receptionist?

When Sheila finally did get up to announce her, Alicia was amused to notice that she stopped at his office door to check out her appearance. Looks like Sheila has some designs on Martin.

“There’s an Alice Nelson to see you, sir,” announced Sheila, mangling the name. “She doesn’t have an appointment.”

Much to Sheila’s dismay, Martin agreed to see Alicia right away. Martin got up from his desk and, enveloped her in a big hug.

Attached File  6-6MartinHugs.jpg   95.71K   9 downloads

“How are you, my dear? I haven’t seen you since you started college. Are you about ready to take on the business world.”

“Actually, Uncle Martin, I’ve gotten a little side tracked. Can you help me with a legal issue?”

Attached File  6-7coffee.jpg   97.3K   9 downloads

“Of course, Alicia, anything for my favorite niece.”

“I want to find out about a piece of property in Riverblossom Hills. The address is 120 Riverview Rd. I need to know who is the owner of record, and if it is for sale.

“Sound’s pretty straight forward. Want me to call you when I find out?’

“Please. And Uncle Martin, be sure to bill me. Sheila would have a fit if she thought you were doing pro-bono work for me.”

Attached File  6-8findtheland2.jpg   101.69K   13 downloads

Martin laughed. “Let me worry about Sheila! I’ll be in touch.”

Recruiting

When Alicia decided they were ready to spread the word, Brady suggested having a meeting disguised as a party. He loves a party, and has no reservations about mixing business with pleasure. After all, people have used parties to sell everything from plastic food storage boxes to condominiums to timeshares.

Attached File  7-1party3.jpg   89.22K   10 downloads

Casteroff Dorm had a big front room, and they could use the kitchen for the refreshments.

Attached File  7-2Party2.jpg   99.44K   13 downloads Attached File  7-3Party1.jpg   81.59K   15 downloads

Drinks were passed around and everyone helped themselves to the pizza. When the moment felt right, Alicia asked for everyone’s attention.

Attached File  7-4Call to attention.jpg   101.36K   18 downloads

Thank you for coming. I hope you are enjoying the party,” she launched nervously into her prepared speech. Even though it was Demtra’s idea, Alicia was elected to make the presentation. After a short explanation of the Mayan situation and what they had all been thinking about, she continued.

Attached File  7-5meeting1.jpg   58.37K   17 downloads

“Demtra, Brady, and I,” she nodded to her co-conspirators, “propose that we pool our resources and buy the land Ms. Freelove told us about. I know it is still close to civilization, but it’s probably the best we can do. Living in the mountains alone can be quite dangerous of itself. At least with this place we‘d have a safety net while we are getting set up.”

Attached File  7-6Chart.jpg   90.19K   14 downloads

Alicia had prepared her thoughts as if she were making a presentation to the shareholders. “Let me explain how our thinking goes. Until whatever is predicted happens, the truth is we will still be able to call upon the outside for assistance. I think we should use the time to stockpile our supplies, start our gardens and learn to fish, set up defensible perimeters and do whatever other farming we can manage. We can support ourselves by selling excess things we grow or make, but I don’t think we should get outside jobs. We need to use this time to practice living the way we will need to live if disaster does strike.

Heads nodded all around. She had their attention now.

Because we have all been living in dorms, we are already used to austerity, lack of privacy, and crummy food.” She paused for the obligatory laughter.

“We have almost a year to prepare.” Brady was never one to rush things.

“What if the Maya are wrong and nothing happens?” Elliott chimed in.

Attached File  7-7Eliot asks.jpg   99.55K   16 downloads

“We can go our separate ways, or those who want to can stay.” Alicia had already given this some thought.

“But all our money will be tied up. How could we leave?” More nodding.

Brady, surprisingly, comes up with a suggestion. “Let’s make a slush fund with some the money we are contributing now, and with money we make during the next year. If someone wants to leave, they can have a share of the fund to start over. If most of us want to leave, we can sell out and divide the proceeds. If someone wants to keep the place, we’ll all have first rights of refusal.”

“Of course, if the worst happens, there will be no question of leaving, there won’t be anywhere to go.”

Attached File  7-8bradysuggests.jpg   62.29K   17 downloads

Alicia was impressed. She was beginning to take another look at her pleasure loving friend. “Brady, that’s a really good idea. I’d thought about using all our money now to help with the setup. But, I agree that people should be able to leave if they need to. It’s worth the possible risk of bank failure so that no one feels trapped.”

“Don’t act so surprised,” joked Brady. “I can have good ideas, I’m almost a graduate. Do you want to take a vote or something?”

Attached File  7-9I\'mgraduating.jpg   67.17K   17 downloads

“Demetra has been taking notes, I can ask my uncle to draft a preliminary agreement and we can look at it at his office.”

The Contract

In the end six showed up at Martin’s office to go over the agreement.

Attached File  8-1six show.jpg   105.4K   11 downloads

Martin carefully explained the financial aspects of the purchase. The property was listed for 50,000 simoleons. Each would contribute 12,500 simoleons for the buy in. A trust fund of 15,000 simoleons would be set up, ensuring that no one would be destitute if they had to leave. A second bank account would be opened for operating expenses and improvements. If they were able to recruit others to join, the trust and operating fund would be increased. Half of all simoleons earned during the year would be spent on improvements and the rest would be split between the trust fund and the person who earned it. This would allow some personal spending money for clothes, entertainment and dates.

Attached File  8-2terms.jpg   84.68K   14 downloads

Decisions about spending and assignment of responsibilities would be made by a vote, a simple majority rules. There would be no leader.

Attached File  8-3Martinexplains.jpg   122.41K   15 downloads

“You’ll be shopping for food at first, but should aim to be self-sufficient by the end of 9 months.” Martin took the time to reiterate the seriousness of the situation.

Each of the six solemnly signed the agreement.

Attached File  8-4signing.jpg   109.25K   11 downloads

Now it was just a matter of closing on the property and graduating.
As they left, Alicia’s parting statement was on all their minds. “We have to do this seriously. If we approach it like a jolly camping trip we will surely fail.”

Visit to the Property

Attached File  9-1 the Buildings.jpg   79.57K   8 downloads
Oh my God, this is perfect!” Brady and Alicia walked through the property together. “I was afraid that it would just be a field when Demetra’s mother told us about it. “

Alicia agreed. “I think I like Riverblossom Hills, too.”

The two friends headed directly to two buildings at the back of the site.

Attached File  9-2 usablespace.jpg   161.32K   13 downloads

“This looks like a great storage space for our food and supplies. We can start filling it up with our stuff, now, even before we move in. Those hippies built a pretty good building. It just needs some paint.” Alicia started planning the space in her head.

Attached File  9-3 hopeitdeosntexplode.jpg   138.64K   13 downloads

“This heater is a real antique. I hope it doesn’t explode. I see they left plenty of chopped wood. We should be able to get as much as we want from the forest behind us.

“Let’s see what the other building is.” Alicia was already striding over to the small building on the east side of the property. “It’s a real bathroom, but yuck. Only one step up from an outhouse. How did so many people get by with so little privacy? No wonder it all came apart.”

Attached File  9-4 bathroomyuck.jpg   140.61K   12 downloads

Alicia gives the structure a quick inspection. “Some tile and updated features will make it good as new. I guess they were here long enough to put in a well and run pipes to the bathroom. It seems pretty small for six people. Even friendly people.”

Brady sighed, “Way better than I was expecting though. I kinda thought we might be hauling buckets from the pond.” Both Sims shuddered at the thought.

Carter and Demetra had wandered off to the southwest side of the lot. There was a loud shout, Alicia and Brady trotted over to them.

Attached File  9-7 trees.jpg   93.64K   11 downloads

“It is a mature orchard!” Carter exclaimed.

“I told you so,” said Demetra. “Mom said these trees were planted over 40 years ago. A bit of pruning and a good talking-to will get them producing right away.”

Attached File  9-6 The Gardens.jpg   74.44K   11 downloads

“Did you check out the pond? I can actually see the fish swimming around! I can totally see this property supporting us.” Carter doesn’t even try to hide his excitement. “I can’t wait to get my hook into the water!”

“What about sleeping arrangements? Looks like they started a couple of buildings but never finished them.” Apparently the former owners had changed their minds about sleeping arrangements several times. All that remained were some foundations.

“Tents for now, then a construction project as we go along. I wouldn’t mind learning a little carpentry.” Carter was really talking fast now and the others could see that he getting into the idea of roughing it.

“I know you said it isn’t camping, Alicia, but it sure feels like it to me. I really liked camping as a kid. Can we have a bonfire?”

Alicia couldn’t help smiling while she put together a list of immediate purchases and called for their first vote. Elliot and Faun had arrived and joined the others in the orchard.

Attached File  9-8 amatueorchard.jpg   91.78K   12 downloads

They agreed to purchase two large solar panels and 6 tents.

“I think the panels could run two refrigerators, and there is already a propane tank on the property, for the hot water heater.” Elliott had majored in Physics and had a good grasp of things mechanical.

Two used refrigerators were added to the list.

“Let’s have a look at the well and see about replacing the electric pump with a wind-powered pump. Elliot, would you like to go into town to check this out and get us some quotes?” Alicia noted this on her list.

“Sure thing,” responded Elliot. “I can drive a hard bargain.”

Attached File  9-9 canthiswaterheaterbesaved.jpg   53.62K   10 downloads

Alicia is on a roll, “At first we can cook on the old grill, but we should look into getting a wood burning stove.

“Do we have volunteers to keep the books and do the buying?”

“I can do the books, I took a couple of accounting classes,” Faun volunteered. Alicia was again surprised. Faun had not said much so far, and Alicia was ashamed that she had fallen prey to the stereotype that really attractive people were inherently stupid.

Demetra volunteered to help with the buying. Shopping was her favorite pastime aside from partying.

They ended by agreeing to meet back on the first.

“Everybody bring all the supplies you can beg, borrow or steal. We should grab as many sacks and crates of food as we can lay our hands on and some barrels to store water. Be sure and tell your families that they are expected to visit whenever they want. I know my dad is quite worried, but we’ll be in touch as long as we can.”

“Whoever had easels, sewing machines, pottery wheels, in college, please bring them if you kept them. That’s going to be our only income for the next 12 months. Good luck to all of us!”

The lot is gorgeous!! I don't know how far you've gotten in actual game play with it, so in case you haven't already discovered this. you might want to have them plan to have buildings up before winter hits. My poor Amathyst nearly froze to death living in that tent durring the last two days of fall. I had to wake her up a few times to have her go stand by the fire she got so cold. they are off to a good start though. :)

Good morning wordlesswriter. Thanks for the tip about the weather. I am actually pretty far ahead, so I found out that those tents don't have good sleeping bags inside! :D

Thanks Marietta! I'm having a blast thinking up problems for them to have.

I am so enjoying the story. I was sad when I realized I read the last chapter. Looking forward to more!
Question.... what was that "animal" person at the party? lol
Keep up the great writing, you "hot" story author! :-)
