If you're looking for help to get all these great user-created downloads from TSR and other sites into your Sims game on your Mac, check out the tutorial for **edit** located here on TSR. The information in that tutorial can be applied to downloads from nearly all sites so you'll never be limited to just the Maxis creations again :)

Edit: It seems the tutorial on TSR has gone missing. Until it is restored, I have posted the original up on my site (since I wrote the tutorial to begin with). You can find it here: Using Downloads in The Sims for Mac

Also, it seems that the link to FarMaker/Unzipper in that tutorial is no longer current. Until I get a chance to update the tutorial, here is the current link to FarMaker/Unzipper: http://www.baumfamil.../dave/farmaker/

I think that we should all establish a site with a HUGE database of Mac/Sims info....But i cant doit by myself, i have my own site, and a very busy life, but i have compiled some instructions from the Mac BBS at the sims website...Lets have some type of meeting and see what we can come up with. This has been an idea at the Mac BBS for sometiem now and i think introducing it to the TSR mac boards will help the plan start off.

Something I haven't seen in the FAQ for Mac users, and maybe something that others don't have to do: downloads I get (from various sites) do not work unless I translate them first with MacLinkPlus. Not all files - iff and far files work fine, but I do have to convert all the text files (cmx and skn) to Mac documents. I also convert bmp to Mac jpg, but I'm not sure whether this is necessary.

There are instructions all over the place telling you PC files work with Mac, but they don't for me without doing the above conversions.

My computer is controlled by Sims. Why do Sims do such silly things?

The skins mashed don;t work becaue the game doesn;t sopport files above 32-char.I find the combo of Skin Shrinker and Simshow usefull. Skin shrinker changes the name of the mesh to under the 32-char limit, and corrected the name in the file. Simshow can let your veiw the skin both with the prescibed mesh the creater chose and all other meshes you may have.

Simshow will not buyable skins till they have been re-named to start with b and has troble with files that have a letter in the 3-digit combo.(if the file is b3w7 or bj38 rather then b020)

Hi BB. It looks like they slightly moved the page for FarMaker since the link was put in the tutorial. Here's the current link: http://www.baumfamil.../dave/farmaker/ Hope that helps! :)

Thanks for the help, Trillian. I managed to download Farmaker, and did unzip the folder.... then I found may files which appeared as excels but i knew they are the objects I desired. I dragged them to Farmaker and turned out to have a file bearing a Sim-look-alike icon... once i clicked on the icon, the game will start. But do I have to click each converted icon once??

I have read some literature telling how one should put the folders in place... but those are for PC Sim player... I am using OS X 10.3 instead.

Pls help again. I apologize for my ignorance :P

Thanks

If you read through the tutorial (I've updated the first post in this thread to have a current link by the way), it lists where you need to put the files for each kind of download. I usually put my downloaded objects in the /GameData/UserObjects folder (that is, look where you have the game installed, find the GameData folder, and then find the UserObjects folder inside that).

Your unzipped files look like Excel files? That sounds like the extension is cut off, which confuses me since you have OS10.3.

If they are objects, I would rename them with a .iff extension before you use Farmaker on them. And put them (the original files) into a folder and far that folder. Then the resulting .far file is what goes into the game. But, also, you don't far one file at a time, you should use Farmaker on a folder full of .iff files.

If you plan to download a lot, you might want to start to organize your DLs now, such as make a folder for all your bath items & put your baths items .iffs into that folder... and far that. Then you would have a file name baths.far, which is what you put in your game.

One last tip, don't use Farmaker on an already .far'd file. It doesn't work.
